How Farmer’s Markets Got Their Start

It’s that time of the year again! Once the pollen count drops, the farmer’s markets start to come alive. Let’s see how they began.

Believe it or not, farmer’s markets have been around in the U.S. since way before Instagram made fresh tomatoes look glamorous. Back in 1730, folks in Lancaster, Pennsylvania set up one of the first official markets, where farmers showed up with carts full of veggies, meats, and baked goods to sell straight to hungry townspeople. Fast forward a couple hundred years — supermarkets took over, and farmer’s markets got kinda forgotten. But in the 1970s, people started craving real, local food again (hello, hippie movement), and farmer’s markets made a big comeback. Thanks to some government help and a whole lot of love for fresh, homegrown goodness, they’re now a staple for Saturday mornings — cute tote bags and all.

Dad joke of the week

I've been thinking about taking up meditation. I figure it's better than sitting around doing nothing!
